Shedd Aquarium welcomed a newborn dolphin calf early Monday.
About 12:10 a.m., Pacific white-sided dolphin Piquet gave birth to the healthy calf, estimated to be 3 feet in length and weighing about 28 pounds, according to a statement from the aquarium.
“The calf appears to be strong, and the experienced mother is very attentive,” zoo officials said.
The newborn must overcome several milestones, including bonding with its mother, learning to nurse and eventually learning to feed independently.
While the mother and calf bond, they will be off exhibit and remain under 24-hour observation by the aquarium’s marine mammal and animal health teams, zoo officials said.
