A lawsuit filed Thursday claims a lawyer attending a convention at the Intercontinental Hotel last September punched two men wearing St. Louis Cardinals jerseys after making disparaging comments to them about the baseball team.

The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court against the Intercontinental Hotels corporation and the lawyer, identified only as John Doe.

John Doe was attending a convention for workers’ compensation attorneys on Sept. 24, 2014 at the downtown hotel while St. Louis residents Ryan Easley and Michael McDermott ate at Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, located inside the hotel, the suit said.

About midnight, John Doe stumbled into the steakhouse “red-faced, and slurring his words” and approached Easley and McDermott who were “peacefully eating their dinner,” the suit said.

At some point the attorney said something derogatory about the mens’ Cardinals jerseys and the baseball team, the suit claims. Then, without explanation, he punched both Easly and McDermott in the face.

Both were injured, and Easley suffered a fracture. The plaintiffs claim neither of them fought back.

The attorney could not have been angry about a loss: the Cubs played the Cardinals that day and won 3-1.

The hotel group could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

Among its claims, the four-count suit partially blames the hotel for being negligent and allowing the attorney to become drunk. Easley and McDermott are requesting an unspecified amount in damages.
