A driver who was killed in a crash that left two others critically injured last week on the Far South Side has been identified as a Gary man.

The crash happened about 10:05 p.m. in the 11600 block of South Torrence, Chicago Police said. The vehicle lost control, and struck a curb and a fire hydrant. The car then tipped over and crashed into a porch, police said.

The driver, 19-year-old Devon K. Steele of the 600 block of Jackson Street in Gary, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of multiple blunt force injuries and his death was ruled an accident.

Two other men who were inside the vehicle — ages 18 and 20 — were pinned inside and had to be extricated, officials said.

It took about an hour to get the last man out of the car, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

They were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, Langford said.
