An elderly couple died in a single-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in the South Side Hyde Park neighborhood.

Wilbon B. McClerkin, 73, was driving a car westbound in the 1700 block of East 57th Drive at 2:23 p.m. when it left the road and crashed into a tree, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

His wife, 72-year-old Winnie Maecole -McClerkin, was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash, authorities said.

The McClerkins, of the 8400 block of South Marquette Avenue, were both pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Autopsies were scheduled for Monday.

The police Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
