A 70-year-old Gary man died Sunday morning after he was struck by a train in northwest Indiana.

Hassan Rafiq was struck by a train while walking in the 1000 block of Broadway about 8:20 a.m., according to Gary police Lt. Dawn Westerfield and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Rafiq, of the 1200 block of Washington Street in Gary, was taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake, where he was pronounced dead at 9:03 a.m., according to the coroner’s office.

Witnesses told officers the crossing gates were down when the man walked across the tracks, Westerfield said.

Rafiq suffered blunt force trauma and his death was ruled an accident, according to the coroner’s office.
