A man is facing a misdemeanor charge after he fatally struck a 61-year-old woman with his car in the Southwest Side Ashburn neighborhood Friday evening, according to police.

Darrell Surles, 55, was driving westbound in his 2006 Saturn in the 3200 block of West 87th Street about 5 p.m. when he heard a noise and stopped, according to Chicago Police.

He walked back eastbound on 87th and found he had struck a pedestrian, 61-year-old Marian L. Hayes, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Hayes, of the 500 block of East 89th Street, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she died two days later at 3:16 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found she died of multiple injuries from a vehicle striking a pedestrian, and her death was ruled an accident.

Surles, of Evergreen Park, was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license, and was also cited for failure to exercise due care to avoid striking a pedestrian, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said. He was released on his own recognizance, and is next due to appear in court on March 10.
