A fire Thursday caused about $100,000 in damage to a home in west suburban St. Charles.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 400 block of South 14th Street just after 3 p.m., according to a statement from the St. Charles fire department.

A resident returning home discovered the fire spreading from the basement into a stairwell, fire officials said.

The blaze was extinguished in about 40 minutes, and no one was injured, fire officials said. It caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, forcing the residents to stay with family members.

The fire was thought to be accidental.
