A house fire in west suburban St. Charles caused more than $70,000 worth of damage Thursday night.

Crews responded at 9:21 p.m. to the blaze in the 1700 block of South 7th Avenue, according to the St. Charles Fire Department.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to put out the fire, which had spread from the rear of the home on the outside to the basement and a first-floor bathroom, fire officials said.

Smoke detectors had roused the people inside, officials said. No one was hurt.

The fire left the home uninhabitable and American Red Cross members were assisting the residents with lodging for the night.

The cause is under investigation, but was not thought to be suspicious.
