Brookfield Zoo euthanizes lion after it falls in moat

Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, staff at the suburban zoo checked on Isis, a 14-year-old female African lion, and “all appeared normal.” A short time later, she was found at the bottom of a moat. She was the second lion to be euthanized at the zoo in two weeks.

For the second time in two weeks, a lion at the Brookfield Zoo had to be euthanized.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday, staff at the suburban zoo checked on Isis, a 14-year-old female African lion, and “all appeared normal,” the zoo said in a Facebook post.

A short time later, though, Isis was found “laying on the floor of the moat.”

“Although not witnessed, it appears that Isis fell and was injured,” the zoo said. “Despite the immediate and intensive treatment provided by the veterinary staff, Isis sustained significant injuries and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her [Tuesday].”

The death of Isis comes shortly after that of Zenda, her mate. Both lions arrived at Brookfield Zoo in May 2008.

“They could often be seen grooming one another and sleeping together,” the zoo said. “Isis and Zenda were majestic animals who had a strong bond. The animal care staff, who dedicated their lives to care for these charismatic lions, are heartbroken by their loss.”

Zenda was euthanized because of “age-related issues that impacted his quality of life,” the zoo said.
