29-year-old man dies nearly a week after Merrillville crash

A 29-year-old man died nearly a week after he was involved in a head-on crash in northwest Indiana.

Mike Cheesebrough was driving a 2007 Pontiac G6 eastbound on Pontiac Avenue approaching Vermont Street about 5:30 p.m. on July 18 when he crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2006 Pontiac G6 head-on, Merrillville Police Cmdr. Jeff Rice said.

Witnesses at the scene described his driving as “erratic and aggressive,” Rice said. Before the crash, his car bumped another vehicle from behind near Broadway.

Cheesebrough and the driver of the other car, a 41-year-old Merrillville woman, were both taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Rice said.

Cheesebrough, of the 1100 block of Oakwood in Griffith, Indiana, died at Loyola at 2:22 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The other driver was expected to survive.

An autopsy Tuesday found he died of complications of multiple blunt force injuries from the crash and his death was ruled an accident.

Rice said investigators believe aggressive driving and alcohol were factors in the crash. No charges are expected to be filed.
