Three people were injured when a SUV crashed into a semitrailer Friday on Interstate 90 near northwest suburban Elgin.

The Elgin Fire Department responded about 10:45 a.m. to the crash in the eastbound lanes of the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway at the toll plaza approaching State Street, according to Battalion Chief Terry Bruce. The SUV was found stuck under the trailer after it was unable to brake as it approached the toll plaza.

A female in a rear passenger seat of the SUV was able to get herself out and was in fair condition, Bruce said. The driver and a front seat passenger were extricated from the vehicle after 90 minutes. They were taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin in serious condition.

“A few broken bones, it looks like they’ll be alright,” Bruce said Friday evening.

Illinois State Police are conducting a crash investigation.
