84-year-old man dies after Matteson crash

An elderly man died after he was injured in a crash Saturday night in south suburban Matteson.

Steven Toth, 84, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his 84-year-old wife heading westbound on Vollmar Road when she turned southbound on Ridgeland Avenue and their vehicle was struck by an eastbound car at 10:35 p.m., according to Matteson police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Both vehicles had a green light.

Toth was on the side of the vehicle that was struck by the eastbound car, police said. He was taken to Franciscan St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. Toth lived in the 22700 block of South Butler Lane in Franklin.

An autopsy found he died of multiple blunt force injuries in a motor vehicle collision, and heart disease was listed as a contributing factor, according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident.

Toth’s wife suffered minor injuries and was also treated at a hospital, police said. She was cited for failure to yield.
