Illinois has a new crop growing in its soil this year, but you won’t see any cannabis displayed at the Illinois State Fair.
The Department of Agriculture is promoting the state’s corn, its livestock and its rich agricultural heritage.
But there’s no promotion of the state’s new medical marijuana farmers, some of who began growing their crops this summer.
When asked about whether the Department of Agriculture considered showcasing the state’s new crop, Director Philip Nelson smiled and said, “It’s a new program to the department. We’re working on it.”
He noted some marijuana growers have started growing their plants.
“The General Assembly passed the law and we’re up and running to a degree. It’s going to continue to grow as more of the cultivators start planting.”
