BALTIMORE — Baltimore’s interim police chief says an officer has been shot and wounded and a suspect fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire.

Interim Police Chief Gary Tuggle said at a news conference Sunday evening that a veteran male officer was being treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and did not appear to have life-threatening injuries. Tuggle says “there was a shootout between the suspect and the officer” and no one else was hurt. He says several rounds were fired.

Tuggle says the officer was part of a crime suppression initiative that had gone into a violence-prone west Baltimore district Sunday when the officer came upon the suspect and shots were fired in an alley. The officer and suspect weren’t immediately identified by name or race.
