Weekend snowfall breaks 55-year record in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Parts of central Illinois have registered record snowfalls after a winter storm struck and then lingered for much of the weekend.

Springfield’s State Journal-Registerreports that the state capital broke a 55-year record for daily snowfall on Saturday. It cites the National Weather Service as saying the 8.4 inches of snow that fell on the city broke a previous record for a Jan. 12 in 1964 of 6.6 inches.

The storm began Friday and lasted into Sunday. The weather service says 11.5 inches of snow fell on Springfield over the three days.

Jacksonville, some 30 miles west of Springfield, outdid that total. It got up to 16 inches, prompting school officials to cancel classes for Monday.
