Charges filed against robbery suspect shot by police on West Side

A 27-year-old man shot Sunday night by a Chicago Police officer was trying to rob a West Side gas station, authorities say.

Sherrod Suttle faces two counts each of attempted robbery armed with a firearm and aggravated assault of a peace officer, as well as possession of a controlled substance and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, all felonies.

At 8:52 p.m. Sunday, officers were a block away when they were called to the Citgo at 1001 N. Cicero Ave., according to CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. The officers arrived and saw an armed man holding up the gas station, Guglielmi said.

They “were then confronted” by the suspect and at least one officer opened fire, police said. Suttle was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital.

A handgun was found at the gas station, Guglielmi said. No officers were hurt.

Suttle, of the 4100 block of West Kamerling, was ordered held on a $250,000 bond at a Wednesday hearing, according to Cook County Circuit Court records. His next court date is Oct. 24.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the use of force. The officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
