The Cook County Jail was placed on lockdown for for about ten hours Tuesday after 18 percent of the jail’s failed to show up for work.

A large number of workers on the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift did not make it into work at the jail at 2700 S. California, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.

The only inmate movement was for medical and mental health check-ups, according to the sheriff’s office. Public visitation continued as scheduled.

The lockdown was lifted about 5 p.m. as staffing levels returned to normal.
