Charges have been filed against a driver who crashed into a tree in north suburban Evanston on Sunday and critically injured a 20-year-old man.

About 2:40 p.m., officers were sent to Pitner Avenue and Nathaniel Place to check on a crash where the driver was attempting to leave the scene, Evanston police said.

Officers learned that the 20-year-old was leaning into the window of a vehicle driven by Dawan D. Williams, 19, who accelerated and crashed into a tree, police said. The 20-year-old was thrown from a vehicle into a light pole. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head.

Williams, of the 1800 block of Grey in Evanston, attempted to run away, but was stopped by two people until officers arrived, police said. He was taken into custody and a small amount of marijuana was found inside his vehicle.

Williams was charged with felony charges of reckless conduct and leaving the scene of an accident with injury, police announced Wednesday. He was also cited for operating an uninsured vehicle.

Additional charges could be added, police said. Investigators have been unable to interview the man injured in the crash.
