Working out boosts the immune system, so it does help to shake off the sniffles and make a point to sweat. But if there are stronger symptoms, performance coach and exercise physiologist Pete McCall tells Refinery29.com when it is best to stay at home.

If you can’t imagine missing your SoulCycle class, use the neck rule: If your symptoms are above the neck (sniffles, headache) you’re fine sticking with your routine. However, if the symptoms exhibit below the neck (for example, nausea), go ahead and take a few days off to recover.
