Fire breaks out at old Joliet prison featured in ‘Blues Brothers’

A fire broke out Monday evening at the former Joliet prison that was featured in the movie “Blues Brothers.”

Authorities were called to the fire at 7:35 p.m. in one of the buildings within the walls of the old prison at 1125 Collinst St. in Joliet, according to Joliet police.

Heavy smoke was coming from a two-story stone building referred to as the Industrial Building, according to the Joliet Fire Department. The building stored many combustible items.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 11:42 p.m., the fire department said. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials and detectives from the Joliet Police Department are conducting an arson investigation, authorities said. This was the third fire at the facility.

The prison, which closed in 2002 but is still owned by the state, has been featured in films such as “Blues Brothers” and “Let’s Go to Prison” and the TV series “Prison Break.”
