A 23-year-old man died in an attic fire early Friday in west suburban Berwyn.

Anthony Banda, 23, of the 1800 block of Scoville Avenue was found dead in an upstairs attic bedroom, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The Berwyn Fire Department responded about 1:40 a.m. and found heavy fire, with flames coming out of the front attic window of a home in the 1800 block of Scoville Avenue, according to Berwyn Fire Chief Denis O’Halloran.

Firefighers forced open the front door to wake up the home’s occupants, and were told that a person was still upstairs in the attic bedroom, O’Halloran said.

Banda was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:04 a.m. An autopsy Friday was inconclusive, with results pending, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
