A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in the Little Village neighborhood early Sunday on the Southwest Side.

Just before 5 a.m., Marco Mendez was riding in a vehicle in the 2500 block of South Whipple when someone in a black SUV opened fire, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical examiner’s office.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the face. The driver took him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m., authorities said. Mendez lived in the same block where the shooting happened.

Investigators think the shooting was gang-related, police said.
