Man dies after Avondale hit-and-run

A man died after a hit-and-run crash in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side early Sunday.

Christopher Sanchez, 34, was struck by a vehicle about 5:20 a.m. at North Milwaukee and West Belmont avenues, according to Chicago Fire Department officials and Sanchez’s family.

Fire Media Affairs Chief Juan Hernandez said the victim “may have flown about 30 feet from where he got hit.”

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Victoria Torres, Sanchez’ niece, said he lived nearby and was walking home after a night out when he was struck. She said he worked as a mechanic and was not married.

Sanchez’s family was planning to hold a vigil at the intersection where was fatally struck at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the hit-and-run crash.
