Man fatally shoots woman, then self in Stony Island Park

A 27-year-old man shot and killed a 25-year-old woman before taking his own life Monday night in the Stony Island Park neighborhood on the South Side.

Derell D. Sikes shot Jasmine Marie Johnson about 8:15 p.m. during an argument that started in Johnson’s vehicle, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

After Johnson stopped the vehicle in the 7800 block of South Bennett where Sikes lived, Sikes got out and fired multiple times at Johnson, police said. Johnson drove away as Sikes continued to shoot at her and crashed into a parked car.

Sikes then walked a short distance away and fatally shot himself, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson, who lived in suburban South Holland, suffered a gunshot wound to her chest and was rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she died of the wound, authorities said.

The medical examiner’s office ruled Johnson’s death a homicide and Sikes’ death a suicide following autopsies Tuesday.
