An alleged carjacker was shot to death by his intended target in the Loop

Ida B. Wells Drive was closed from LaSalle Street to State Street for an investigation after a 22-year-old was fatally shot in the head Friday in the Loop.

A 41-year-old man told police that he was in his 2015 BMW when a 2019 Volkswagen driven by Lonnell Irvin rear ended him about 3:15 a.m. in the first block of Ida B. Wells Drive, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

The older man got out of the BMW to see the damage, went back to get his cellphone and Irvin approached him with a gun, authorities said.

Irvin demanded the keys to the BMW and pushed the man into the car, authorities said. The 41-year-old, who has a concealed-carry permit, pulled out a gun from the vehicle and shot Irvin in the head.

He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. An autopsy released April 27 found Irvin died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head. He lived in Englewood.
