A firework killed a man and injured a second person after it prematurely exploded Saturday in Hebron, Indiana.

Scott McKee II, 37, was placing a 3-inch firework mortar into a tube in the 600 block of Persimmon Parkway when it ignited and struck him in the head, according to the Porter County Coroner. McKee was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person was significantly injured in the accident and was flown to a Chicago hospital, the coroner said.

An investigation was ongoing.
