A man was shot while trying to recover his girlfriend’s stolen vehicle in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side Friday night.

At 11:29 p.m., the 35-year-old was shot in the leg and hand in 300 block of North Pine as he got inside his girlfriends’s vehicle to recover it, according to Chicago Police.

Before the shooting, the man discovered his girlfriend’s vehicle was being stolen and followed the vehicle in another car, police said. The car thieves got out of the stolen vehicle and ran away, but fired shots at him when he got into the driver’s side of the stolen vehicle.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.
