A 27-year-old man was taken into custody after a five-hour standoff with police at an industrial park Monday in west suburban Wheatland Township.

About 1:30 p.m., the Will County sheriff’s office received a call from the man’s father, saying they had argued about finances and his son had threatened to kill himself, Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said.

The man barricaded himself inside a building at the Wheatland Industrial Park at 160 Ramm Dr. in unincorporated Naperville, Ackerson said.

Officers, including a SWAT team, responded and learned the man was armed, Ackerson said. Authorities secured the area and evacuated a few nearby industrial buildings.

The SWAT team made contact with the man, and negotiated for about three hours before he stopped communicating.

Authorities waited about an hour before deciding to deploy tear gas and enter the building, Ackerson said. The man left the building through the back window and tried to run, but officers shot him with two non-lethal bean bags.

A loaded handgun was discovered near the window, Ackerson said.

The man was taken into custody about 7:30 p.m., and no one was injured, Ackerson said. He was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
