A man was fatally struck by a freight train early Wednesday in south suburban Blue Island.

About 3:30 a.m., a CSX train traveling from Chicago to Philadelphia struck a pedestrian walking on the railroad tracks at 127th Street in Blue Island, according to a statement from a CSX spokesperson.

The pedestrian was identified as 23-year-old Michael R. Madia, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His home address was not immediately known.

An autopsy Thursday found he died of multiple injuries due to a train striking a pedestrian, and his death was ruled a suicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

“CSX extends its sympathies to all involved in this morning’s tragic accident in Blue Island,” according to the statement.
