A man was shot while trying to fight off a would-be robber Friday evening in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.

The 30-year-old was on the street when someone walked up to him with a gun and demanded his possessions at 6:08 p.m. in the 6400 block of North Campbell Avenue, according to Chicago police.

The man tried to grab the gun from the attempted robber, who fired several shots before fleeing into an alley, police said. Nothing was stolen.

The man was shot three times in the leg and was taken to St. Francis Hospital, police said.

Area North detectives are investigating.
