A 49-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday in south suburban Calumet City.

Officers responded to a person down about 2 a.m. in the 200 block of South Bensley Avenue and found a 49-year-old man with a gunshot wound, according to Calumet City police.

Avery Cochran, who lived on the same block, was taken to Franciscan Health in Hammond, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m., according to police and the Lake County (Ind.) coroner’s office. His death was ruled a homicide.
