A man died Saturday afternoon, two days after he was charged with DUI for a South Side crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway, police said.
About 3:30 a.m. Thursday, 40-year-old Demetrius Pope was driving southbound on I-90/94 near 87th Street when his car swerved and struck the front passenger side of another vehicle, according to Illinois State Police.
He then lost control and his car crashed into the right concrete wall, police said.
The driver of the other vehicle involved was not hurt, police said. The two right lanes of the expressway were closed for more than three hours after the crash.
Pope, of the 7200 block of South Whipple, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 12:09 p.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
Police said Pope had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the crash.
