Two lanes of Lake Shore Drive on the South Side will be closed Tuesday night into early Wednesday for repairs to prevent buckling pavement during the intense heat expected later this week.

Two northbound lanes between 31st and 57th streets will be closed between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday to make permanent repairs to sections that buckled in June, and to relieve pressure in sections still subject to buckling, according to the Chicago Department of Transportation.

During the closure, one lane will remain open and no ramps or exits will be shut down, according to the CDOT.

However, delays are expected and drivers should consider using the Dan Ryan or surface streets instead of Lake Shore Drive.

Though the work will reduce the risk, extreme heat is predicted in Chicago for the next several weeks and buckling may still occur. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 90s Thursday and Friday, according to the weather service.

CDOT will be closely monitoring Lake Shore Drive and crews will be ready to make emergency repairs.
