Woman, 54, fatally struck by Metra train

A 54-year-old woman was fatally struck by an express Metra train in Mount Prospect Tuesday evening.

Doris Zell, a Mount Prospect Resident, walked around the lowered train gates in an attempt to cross the tracks before the train took off, a preliminary investigation by Mount Prospect revealed.

The accident happened at 6:30 p.m. on the Union Pacific Northwest rail line, said Meg Reile, a Metra spokesperson.

Zell was pronounced at the scene, and not other injuries were reported as a result of the accident, police said.

Trains were delayed for about two hours after the accident, Reile said.

The tracks near the station were cleared at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after a safety inspection was completed, police said.
