Woman back in custody after escaping from courthouse

A woman was taken back into custody Sunday evening, two days after she allegedly slipped out of a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Alicia Gines, 19, was arrested about 7 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Archer Avenue on the Southwest Side, according to a statement from the Cook County sheriff’s office.

Gines had fled the courthouse, located in the 2600 block of South California Avenue, about 10:45 a.m. Friday, officials said.

Gines was charged with robbery in 2017 and placed on electronic monitoring, the sheriff’s office said. She failed to show up to a court appearance on Sept. 25 and was wanted on a warrant when she was arrested yesterday.

Gines fled the courthouse Friday morning while she was waiting for appear before a judge, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office was investigating and possible additional charges were pending.
