Rahm in Washington March 2, 2012. Public and non public schedule

WASHINGTON–Mayor Rahm Emanuel returns here for the second time in two weeks, to be part of a panel on education reform with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and their school chiefs.

That is on Emanuel’s public schedule. What is not on his public schedule is that he is also meeting with two cabinet officials, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who is also a close friend and Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

I understand the day may be coming when Emanuel puts all his government meetings on his schedule, even if they are closed press. That’s good, because then I don’t have to be a nudge about schedule transparency.

Last week, Emanuel did not even disclose he was flying to Washington to meet with cabinet officials. The education panel was announced earlier this week by the Education Department and is on Emanuel’s official schedule today.

SIDEBAR: The panel is in the same room–at American University’s Katzen Center–where last November Zeke Emanuel on a Moment Magazine panel–talked about growing up with brothers Rahm and Ari in Chicago and Wilmette. Read my column on the Emanuel brothers HERE.
