A federal jury in Houston convicted two top former Enron executives on Thursday. With that peg, a Democratic operative pointed me to a calendar in evidence in the case that noted a Sept. 26, 2001, meeting Dave McSweeney, the 8th District GOP House candidate, then working for the Bank of America, had with former Enron CFO Andy Fastow, along with McSweeney’s Bank of America colleague Jim Mercurio.

The meeting came as Enron was collapsing and McSweeney was sent in to assess the situation. McSweeney told me, “I never provided any loans, I never structured any transactions for Enron.”

Nor did he do any Enron deals when he worked for another bank, he said.

McSweeney called the Democratic effort to link him to Enron, whose name is now synonymous with corporate malfeasance, “character assassination.”

He said, “I have absolutely nothing to hide. I am 100 percent clean on this topic.”

On June 19, McSweeney heads to Houston for a fund-raiser at Mercurio’s home.
