Ed. Sec. Arne Duncan in Chicago today

WASHINGTON – Education Secretary Arne Duncan, the former Chicago Public Schools chief, returns home on Monday for events at the Benito Juarez Community Academy and the Economic Club of Chicago.

At Juarez, 1450-151- W. Cermak Rd., Duncan will be part of a roundtable discussion with, according to the Education Department, students, parents,teachers “community partners” and “Hispanic education stakeholders.”

Duncan is the headline speaker at the Economic Club of Chicago’s dinner meeting at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan. It is billed as a “fireside chat with Wendy Kopp, CEO & founder of Teach for All and Teach for America and, according to the Education Department, “Chicago business and civic leaders.”

After the 2 p.m. Chicago time event at the Academy, Duncan has a 3:10 p.m. press conference scheduled.

From the Education Department: At the Academy Duncan “will participate in a roundtable discussion with staff from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics to hear from local students, parents and educators about the work being carried out at the academy and the progress being made toward increasing the high school graduation rate, decreasing the dropout rate, and accessing postsecondary education for Hispanic students.”

Later, Duncan “will attend a dinner meeting at the Economic Club of Chicago where he will join Wendy Kopp, CEO of Teach for All and founder of Teach for America, for a moderated, wide-ranging conversation about education issues in the United States and abroad. Attendees at the dinner will include local business and civic leaders.”
