Today, President Barack Obama is presenting the Presidential Medal of Freedom to sixteen individuals, including Oprah Winfrey, Ernie Banks, Bill Clinton and Gloria Steinem.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to those who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to the White House. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Executive Order signed by President John F. Kennedy establishing the Presidential Medal of Freedom, it said.
