Mitch McConnell on Senate: It 'didn’t do squat for years'

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to point something out to outgoing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: “The Senate basically didn’t do squat for years.”

In a New York Times interview, McConnell said he is very aware of the hurdle he has to overcome when he takes command of the Senate on Jan. 6.

“One of my challenges is to try to convince some of my members that passing an appropriations bill is a good thing, not a bad thing,” he said.

McConnell says while the Senate was under control of the Democrats, they froze out Republicans and chose to use the chamber as a political platform instead of a legislative one.

“It was not about legislation,” he told the New York Times. “It had nothing to do with an outcome. The Senate basically didn’t do squat for years. I don’t think most members of the Senate wanted it run that way.”

He’s already shaking things up by extending the workweek to Friday, and promises things will be “more chaotic.”“The goal is to let the Senate express its views.” McConnell said.
