James Thompson, the Winnebago County Republican Central Committee chair who used the party’s newsletter to make a racist comment about President Barack Obama, will be allowed to keep his post after a unanimous vote by the committee.

The Rockford Register Star reports that more than 20 committee members took part in the vote, while several non-voting members wanted Thompson to resign.

Thompson came under fire for making the following remark in the newsletter, where he compared Obama to a zebra-donkey:

Media update for the week: saw on the news this week the offspring of a donkey and a zebra, black and white legs, rest all donkey. Not sure why this is news. Now if we can teach him to read a teleprompter, we could have two living creatures the media will fawn over that is part white, part black and all a**!

“After consultation with my executive committee, they have decided unanimously to retain me as chair,” Thompson said after the vote. “And I am pleased to continue to serve in that capacity. Thank you.”
