A renewed effort is being made to jump-start solar panels in Illinois with an amendment to HB 2427, which would require the Illinois Power Agency to buy up to $30 million in electric power from clean sources, with an emphasis on solar installations.

Crain’s Chicago Business reports that not only is the bill supported by environmental groups, but also from Exelon Corp., which is the state’s largest power generator. Illinois Power Agency procures energy statewide for utility customers.

The measure could see action in the Senate tomorrow and passage is expected as there is no major opposition.

Advocates say it could result in up to 5,000 new solar panel installations on homes.
