WASHINGTON–President Barack Obama on Monday meets with Education Secretary Arne Duncan, the former Chicago Public Schools chief,awards Medals of Honor to military heroes and headlines a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

DAILY GUIDANCE AND PRESS SCHEDULE FOR

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2014

In the morning, the President and Vice President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing in the Oval Office. This meeting is closed press.

Later in the morning, the President will meet with Secretary of Education Duncan; the Vice President will also attend. This meeting in the Roosevelt Room is closed press.

In the afternoon, the President will have lunch with the Vice President in the Private Dining Room. This lunch is closed press.

Later in the afternoon, the President will award the Medal of Honor to Army Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins and to Army Specialist Four Donald P. Sloat for conspicuous gallantry.Command Sergeant Major Adkins will receive the Medal of Honor for his actions while serving as an Intelligence Sergeant assigned to Detachment A-102, 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces. Then-Sergeant First Class Adkins distinguished himself during combat operations at Camp A Shau, Republic of Vietnam, on March 9 through March 12, 1966.

Specialist Four Donald P. Sloat will receive the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions while serving as a Machine gunner with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. Specialist Four Sloat distinguished himself during combat operations in the vicinity of Hawk Hill Fire Base, Republic of Vietnam, on January 17, 1970. Dr. William Sloat of Enid, Oklahoma, will accept the Medal of Honor on his brother’s behalf. The President’s remarks in the East Room are open to pre-credentialed media; the deadline to RSVP has closed.

In the evening, the President will attend a DSCC event in Washington, DC. This event is closed press.
