Former state treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, a Democrat, is throwing his support behind Republican Tom Cross in the current race for treasurer, opting to not support fellow Democrat Mike Frerichs.

Giannoulias was on WGN radio Sunday morning and said Cross “understands the role (of treasurer) and when we talk about people willing to break with their party and do what’s right, I think he represents one of those people.”

Giannoulias admits now that he’s not in politics, “who I think would be a good leader is probably not important to a lot of people.”

An exclusive Early & Often poll released Sunday put Cross, an 11-term state representative from Oswego, ahead of Frerichs by a 42 to 35 percent spread.

“While I’m a proud Democrat, proud of what we have done, I do think there are certain people who run for office on both sides who are willing to reach across the aisle,” Giannoulis said on WGN. “I’ve known Tom Cross for awhile. I think he’s got courage. I think he’s a good guy,” Giannoulias said.”
