Obama offers sloppy salute, with coffee cup in hand

It appears President Barack Obama violated a rule in the Marine Corps manual.

While exiting Marine One on Tuesday in New York en route to the United Nations, Obama gave a fairly sloppy salute — with coffee cup in hand.

And it appears in this case, Obama would have been better off not saluting — or putting his coffee cup in his left hand.

“In some situations, the salute is not appropriate,” says the Marine Corps manual. “In general, do not salute when… carrying articles with both hands or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impractical.”

Some comments on the Instagram post brushed it off as not a big deal, which others said it’s “shameful,” “a disrespectful joke” and “complete embarrassment.”
