Kevin McCarthy: Don't tell us how to make our s'mores

SHARE Kevin McCarthy: Don't tell us how to make our s'mores

Last week, the U.S. Forest Service put up a blog post offering up helpful tips on how to make s’mores and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-California, is none too pleased.

In McCarthy’s defense, it does seem a bit ridiculous that people need tips on making such a basic camping dessert that involves three ingredients, a stick and fire, but searching “how to boil water” on the internet reveals pages upon pages of results. So you never know.

First, an exceprt from that Forest Service blog post, which sounds something from the Food Network:

“The degree a marshmallow is roasted runs the gamut, from the barely cooked, light caramel-colored outer layer to the flaming marshmallow that contains a gooey interior wrapped by a crispy, blackened shell.”

That’s some solid drool-inducing writing, but it’s the other suggestions McCarthy has an issue with.

On Thursday, he included this note in a memo he sent to House Republicans:

“I don’t know if you caught this, but last Friday the Forest Service published an article about how to roast marshmallows,” McCarthy wrote. “Tips included using a roasting stick of at least 30 inches in length and substituting fruit for the chocolate and slices of angel food cake for graham crackers.”

He continues: “This perfectly captures what is wrong with our government. Hard-earned tax dollars supporting bureaucrats who can’t pass up an opportunity to tell us how to live our lives.”
