Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tried to pile on Hillary Clinton while she’s down on Tuesday, but instead, his joke in front of the International Association of Fire Fighters went up in flames.

Cruz tried a series of one-liners, and repeated a Clinton line from his CPAC speech.

“By the way, I understand Secretary Clinton chose not to join us,” Cruz said, according to the Texas Tribune. “If only you could have found a foreign nation to foot the bill.”

That line, in reference to a Washington Post report that showed the Clinton Global Foundation accepted donations from foreign countries while she was the secretary of state, was not well-received.

Cruz’s shot elicited audible grumbling and fidgeting in the audience from the several hundred firefighters in attendance.

Maybe he should just stick to Winston Churchill impersonations:
