Candy history exhibit highlights Greek Americans in Chicago

An exhibit about Chicago’s candy-making history opens Thursday at the National Hellenic Museum in Greektown.

The “Sweet Home Chicago” exhibit will tell the stories of the Greek immigrants who ran candy and ice cream shops throughout the city by the late 1800s. By 1906, one of the nation’s Greek language newspapers reported there were 925 Greek-owned candy and ice-cream businesses in Chicago.

The exhibit includes photos, artifacts, a short documentary and activities such as a candy quiz and a candy-wrapping challenge. It was created by the Elmhurst Historical Museum.
