SWAT team incident ends after 6 hours in Rogers Park

After more than 6 hours, a SWAT incident ended peacefully with no injuries Tuesday morning in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.

Officers responded about 9:45 p.m. Monday to the 6800 block of North Sheridan to a call of a person with a gun, according to Chicago Police. Shortly after, a female involved in the incident called 911 and said a man she knew was holding her at gunpoint inside of her apartment on the third floor of the building.

Police and SWAT team members established a perimeter around the scene.

It was unclear how many people were inside the building, but witnesses on the scene said about 12 people were escorted out of the apartment.

Attorneys for people inside the apartment arrived about 2:45 a.m. and were allowed inside the perimeter, according to sources at the scene.

Police said the incident was over by about 4:15 a.m. and one person was in custody. No injuries were reported.

Andrew Snyder, who lives on the block, said he watched the incident unfold from inside the Oasis bar below his apartment at 6809 N. Sheridan Rd., which is next to the building where the incident took place.

Snyder said that he saw about 6 males and 6 females in their mid 20s to early 30s being escorted from the building about 3:45 a.m.

“It looked like everybody walked out for Chicago [Police Department] happily,” Snyder said.

He said he saw other individuals leave the building in handcuffs and be escorted to a police or SWAT vehicle.

“It all ended in a happy way,” said Snyder.

The area is just a few blocks from the Loyola University campus and is home to several restaurants and bars.

“This is not common for this area at all,” said Snyder.

Buses were rerouted around the area of Sheridan and Pratt by 11:30 p.m., according to the CTA. Sheridan Road and Pratt Boulevard were closed to traffic and SWAT teams remained on the scene until about 4:15 a.m.

An investigation is ongoing.
