Rule-breaking kids — armed with sleds — ignore cops, invade Capitol Hill

It’s not often you see a bunch of pint-sized protesters taking over Capitol Hill, but that’s exactly what happened Thursday afternoon.

With snow hitting Washington, D.C. and a sledding ban not still scheduled to be in effect even after Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., asked for the ban to be liftedPopville, a D.C. neighborhood blog, took matters into its own hands.

It organized “a little civil disobedience” with a sled-in, which quickly gained traction thanks to its hashtags: #sleddingisnotacrime and #SledFreeOrDie.

The sledding ban, which has been in effect since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, has been a hot topic of conversation. Capitol Hill police have often been criticized for playing the role of a grumpy old man, essentially telling kids “get off my lawn.”

But on Thursday, the kids won on “America’s front lawn.”

Initially, the cops flexed their muscles.

Even though some kids hit the slope.

But then the cops delivered the official rules.

If you planned on grabbing your snowmobile and tearing it up, forget about it.

The good news is that if you have an ATV, that appears to be fair game, since it isn’t specifically banned.

However, you will need to keep your boats off the lawn, ya’ll.

The signage was a little weak.

The kids eventually won.

Although some kids wanted to do more than simply sled.
